The A - Z of Hotel Felix at your fingertips. Please contact reception for further help or information.
The original building was constructed in 1852 for a surgeon at Addenbrookes hospital and was used as a family home until it was purchased by Cambridgeshire County Council. The building was then known as the Country Centre, offering a range of classes such as needlework, ballroom dancing and home economics.
Hotel Felix takes its name from Saint Felix of Burgundy who was Apostle to the East Angles (that later became known as East Anglia) and the first person to introduce Latin Christianity to Cambridgeshire during the 7th Century. Saint Felix also founded a number of schools in the area including the University of Cambridge.
The sculpture of the dog at the hotel’s entrance was found in a dilapidated state within the grounds of the hotel. It is believed to be a reproduction of a Molossian dog and thought to be connected in some way to a civic monument in Epirus in north western Greece. Similar sculptures around the world have been christened ‘The Dog of Alcibiades’ on account of its missing tail. It was the Athenian statesman Alcibiades who cut off the tail of this dog to give the Athenians something to make fun of other than themselves! A similar reproduction of the dog has also been the focus of a successful campaign by the British Museum. There were fears that the marble sculpture would be taken abroad by a private collector until the National Art Collectors Fund and the Heritage Lottery Fund raised the money needed to ensure the sculpture will stay in Britain, where it has been for 250 years.
The artwork around the hotel has been selected to create an ambience. In Hyperion, the set of three back-lit canvasses were originally from Edward Muybridge’s photographic studies of ‘Animals in Motion’. This is a famous collection of early photographic studies done by Muybridge in the 19th century. The Tiger’s Face and Dog’s Face were also derived from these photographs.
Above the fireplace in Graffiti hangs a heavy mesh ‘Male Torso’ by Peter Osborne who works in the Midlands. ‘Beach, Sea, Rain’, the square landscape in the lobby, is by Kerry Harding who works in Cornwall.
On the first floor of the hotel there is a collection of six watercolour and pencil impressions of Rome by Julian Bray in Atlas and Calypso and in Phoebe are pencil studies of horses also by Julian Bray from the work of Theodore Gericault. Other artists feature round the hotel with many works on sale. Please ask Reception for a price list.
Hotel Felix is the sister hotel to The Grange, a classical Regency townhouse hotel within the historic city of York. Officially also classified AA 4 Star it has an award winning restaurant and executive ensuite bedrooms as well as meeting and private dining facilities. Please ask for a brochure at Reception or visit www.grangehotel.co.uk
